Skating The Track

The weather was nice, the sun was almost down and Zeph decided to have another circle around the sports field. He didn't expect anyone to be there at this hour, but he wasn't that surprised when he saw a fellow about his age skating around, with headphones in his ears.

For no apparent reason, he traded his Nike's for his favorite old pair of chucks and when he ran past the guy, his left shoelace broke. "Dammit", he exclaimed, looking at his feet and thinking what to do. "Stupid, stupid me."

David saw the guy and stopped. Taking out his headphones he said "What's wrong man?". David had pulled his headphones out in tie to hear 'Stupid, stupid me.' "Hey man what's wrong and you shouldn't call yourself stupid yet we haven't even gotten close to midterms yet." he jokingly said with a big grin

"Never mind me", he tried to sound as casual as possible, before he took of his shoes completely. "Just had this minor accident, it's my own fault, but never mind."

He laughed at the guy's bad joke. "Yeah, I'm a real killer when it comes to test, you'll see, you will be calling me stupid as well." It was a little white lie, because Zeph was an excellent student at all the schools he went to, but if it helped him to make male friends here, he was willing to bend the truth a little.

"I'm Zeph, by the way. Zephyr Lee", the boy said, offering his hand to the skater.

David shook the guys hand "I'm Dave, David Nickolaus. Now did you break the aglet?" Dave could tell he was lying about being bad at tests. But Dave was like him and this guy seemed pretty cool.

He smiled at the guy again and shook his hand firmly. "Nice to meet you dude, nice to meet you." His gaze fell again to his shoes, who were now settled in his hands and he walked to the nearest trash can. "They are old and scrappy", he started, chuckling at his actions, "and I think it's time to retire them."

After he threw the chucks in the trash, Zeph came back to the boy. "So, you a sophomore as well? You look my age, but you could never be too sure."

"Ha ha never can be to sure about a wolf's age eh. Thought you'd be good at being able to know your own kind." He said. Dave had known since the boy stepped out onto the track that he was a fellow werewolf. "Well then let's just say that I am 15." Dave happened to look fifteen and be a lot older.

"So how long did you have those Chucks?" Dave asked making conversation.

Everything was much more relaxed now. The fact that this guy was also a werewolf explained all the weird smells and senses to him. He was calm and amused, smiling to his new friend as he continued to talk. "Well, we're about the same age. Awesome. We should totally run tracks together once in a while."

Zephyr was happy. Finally he met someone of his kind. At that moment, he had so much to ask him, but he didn't want to intrude so he answered his question instead. "For too long I guess. They were too small and shabby, I have more than 20 pairs of shoes at home, but for some reason I kept wearing this pair for running and...it's my own fault."
