PostSubject: Baseball Bats and Daisy Chains   Tue Oct 30, 2012 8:29 am

"I hate these flipping uniforms, you know," Luca commented as he grimaced and shuffled to get comfy, slinging the daisy chain he had just threaded over his knee and pouting at Kiva. "They're so... I don't even know. It's the fabric, it's all wrong. It's like... poncy sportsboy fabric. Not that I disapprove of poncy sportsboys, but I just think it could be more comfortable."

They were sitting on the field, waiting for their turn to bat at baseball practice. Though Luca hated PE in any way, shape or form, he liked hitting things and running wasn't too bad. Plus he had a very good cheat that would help him if he so needed it.

There was also the added bonus that if he went to baseball he could hang out with Kiva more, who was easily his favourite person. She was so much better than some other kinds of people, he had decided, and that was why he liked being around her so much. "You know though, in Wales, this is like some stupid girly swot sport that boys don't get caught dead playing. So obviously it suits me just fine."

He grinned and cast a glance over at whoever was batting, wincing as they missed a particularly easy ball to bat. "Oh gosh. I'm going to do even worse than that. I haven't practiced all summer. I haven't done anything all summer, actually, come to that."

Kiva tried to hide her amused smile at Luca’s whining, trying to mask it behind the daisy chain she was still making. “They could make the uniform more co-comfortable. I think it’s supposed to be durable rather than comfortable though. You know, practicality before…comfortality?” that wasn’t a word. Better to just roll with it. “M-maybe we should make our own, that are identical? I-I don’t think our coach would notice.”

She glanced towards the field, watching the current round. She really did enjoy baseball, amazingly. Usually she didn’t like leaving the library or garden, more specifically the book she was reading wherever she was, but baseball was fun. Stress relieving. And time spent with Luca. Goodness knew how reclusive she’d be without him.

She covered her mouth as someone missed, unsure whether to giggle or not. Part of her wanted to, but she also felt really bad about it. “What sport did the boys play then, if they didn’t play baseball?” Kiva did love to hear about Wales. It sounded pretty amazing. “And I’m sure you won’t be that bad. N-not that he was that bad,” she bit back the small smile. “I doubt many people have practiced much this summer.”

What had she done with her summer? “I did do a-a bit of practice. Between my reading, at least. Summer seems to kind of…fly by. Surely you did something.”

"Yeah, but I mean, they don't even look good. They could look better. I'm sure if you're muscular you'd look great but it just makes me look like a fat kid in a plastic bag. Woe is me." He grinned as she tried to hide behind the daisy chain and barred her arm playfully.

Luca beamed as Kiva asked a question about his homeland. He loved talking about Wales more than a lot of things, and he liked it when people actually gave a toss, too. "So, like, if you were woolly and English inside you'd play football, which is not soccer. You actually use your feet. And goals. But then if you were Welsh at heart and you know, decidedly masculine, you'd have like rugby, which was like the actual sport of Wales. American football is like a mix of those two but shit. I just bunked PE if I could. Don't bunk lessons Keevs!"

That was an exciting idea. Jumping onto his knees he grinned. "Oh! Oh! We should. We could be like superheroes. It would be great."

"I swear I did nothing over the holidays," Luca replied with a violent shake of his head. "I sat down, watched crappy hospital dramas and ate Nutella from the jar. What about you then, sweetpea? I- shit that came close! Anyway, how are you?"

Kiva couldn’t stop herself from giggling as Luca barred her arm. “Okay, sure, they’re not the best looking outfits ever. But it could be worse,” she tried to look innocent, she really did. “You-you could actually be a fat kid in a plastic bag. Got to look on the bright side.”

She sometimes forgot that in England they called soccer football. She found a smile tugging at her lips when he started talking about being Welsh and masculine. “What’s rugby like then? Is it like…more physical?” couldn’t she find a better word for it than that? “I don’t bunk lessons! Not-not that there’s anything wrong with-I just like my attendance-!” she should probably shut up before she sounded too much like a teacher’s pet.

She floundered when Luca stood. Was he suggesting they bunk lessons? “Wh-what? We should what? I-I don’t think that’s-we should wait our turn, and…what?”

“Oh, I wish I could eat Nutella from a jar,” Kiva sighed wistfully. Last time she let herself go a little with sweets though she found herself gaining weight a little quickly. “I’m fine. I-I’ve been adding books to my collection. My-my brother was trying to-to get me to go out more though,” as usual.

"Um, excuse me, Miss Rain?" Luca asked, raising his eyebrows. "I'll give you another chance to answer that question with 'Luca, you're totally not fat, you're like a god!' and then we'll pretend that you never said that. Honestly, Keevs."

"Rugby is like the god of all sports," he began, smirking. "Anyway, I wasn't very good at rugby. Something about not being tall enough. Or you know. Straight enough. Or something. Which of course was bullshit, you can see just by looking at me how masculinity simply seeps from my very being. I am like one huge sack of testosterone. Clearly. But anyway, rugby, you throw the ball but you can only pass backwards, and there's tag rugby where you rip pieces of fabric violently off of each other's waists, and then there's proper 'HAKA' gum-shield muddy sweaty intense sport. And I hate mud. And sweat. And hard sports. It wasn't for me."

He rolled his eyes and flopped back into the grass lazily, grinning at the slight worry in her voice. Bless Kiva. This was one of the things he loved about her. She genuinely was the cutest thing he had ever seen in his life. "I meant about having matching uniforms that would make us look like the shiz and not like turds, actually, Keevygeevy," he began, before grinning mischievously. "Though now you say that... It's not like we're doing anything. We could get away so easily. You could like pixie them out or we could make like a storm and practice would be cancelled. And we could do something interesting!"
